The Times Higher Education has released the 2023 World University rankings across 104 countries and regions. Ten Africa universities have been ranked top in the 2023 list.
The University of Cape Town ranks number one in the list of African best universities while Stellenbosch University and the University of Witwatersrand rank second and third respectively.
University of Ibadan comes seventh in Africa while the University of Lagos takes the ninth position.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 include 1,799 universities, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.
This year’s ranking analysed over 121 million citations across more than 15.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 40,000 scholars globally.
To create the THE World University Rankings 2024 list, THE’s data team drew on a comprehensive and growing database containing hundreds of thousands of data points on more than 2,600 global research universities, and employed a global Academic Reputation Survey of more than 68,000 leading scholars, who provided us with their expert views on the world’s leading universities.
In addition, They also analysed 134 million citations to 16.5 million academic publications (from Elsevier’s Scopus database) published over a five-year period between 2018 and 2022.
University of Ibadan (UI)
The University of Ibadan (UI) is a public research university in Ibadan, Nigeria. The university was once a college of the University of London. The college was established in 1948 as University College Ibadan, one of many colleges within the University of London.
It became an independent university in 1962 and is the oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. Through its graduate network, the University of Ibadan has contributed to the political, industrial, economic and cultural development of Nigeria.
The history and influence of the University of Ibadan have made it one of the most prestigious universities in Africa.The University of Ibadan is made up of 92 academic departments organized into 17 faculties,The University of Ibadan has 15 halls of residence that provide accommodation for about 30% of the population of students in the regular studies mode.
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
The University of Lagos, popularly known as UNILAG, is a public research university located in Lagos, Nigeria and was founded in 1962. UNILAG is one of the first generation universities in Nigeria and is ranked among the top universities in the world in major education publications.
The university presently has three campuses in the mainland of Lagos. Whereas two of its campuses are located at Yaba (the main campus in Akoka and the recently created campus at the former school of radiography), its college of medicine is located at Idi-Araba, Surulere.
Its main campus is largely surrounded by the Lagos lagoon and has 802 acres of land. The University of Lagos currently admits over 9,000 undergraduate students annually and enrolls over 57,000 students.
