Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest freestanding mountain in the world, towering at an impressive 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) above sea level.

This stratovolcano, which began developing about 1 million years ago, features three volcanic cones: Kibo (the summit), Mawenzi, and Shira. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is dormant and could potentially erupt again in the future.

Scientists predict that the mountain may be completely ice-free within the next 20 years. To help mitigate the effects of climate change and protect the mountain’s ecosystem, the Tanzanian government has announced plans to plant 4.8 million indigenous trees around the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.
