For communication, radio has played a vital role in reaching out to remote communities and vulnerable populations for ages. A day dedicated to highlighting the pivotal role of radio, UNESCO established World Radio Day to be observed on February 13, every year.
Radio is a form of mass media and communication that usually transmits music, news, and other programmes from a single broadcast station. Since its origin, radio has been a primary medium of communication.
From World War I to the present day, it has connected people from different remote regions, including rural and tribal areas where connectivity has been a big challenge. It has helped create awareness, educate, and connect the masses through a single device.
In 2011, the member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared February 13 World Radio Day. It was then adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 as an international event.
The decision to set World Radio Day on 13th of February, the day of the UN Headquarters-based United Nations Radio was established in 1946, was proposed by the Director-General of UNESCO at the time. The objectives of WRD are principally to raise awareness among the public and the media regarding the importance of radio as well as to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio as well as to enhance networking and international cooperation among broadcasters.
The importance of observing World Radio Day is to acknowledge the unique power of radio as a medium of communication. Radio is a fast, accessible, and cost-effective way to reach out to large audiences, making it an ideal medium for sharing information, promoting awareness, and connecting communities.
World Radio Day is celebrated to reflects the remarkable achievement of radio as a means of communication and information for over 100 years, despite the advent of social media. It also highlights the promise of a dynamic future for radio as a platform that has stood the test of time
