On May 8, 1886, American pharmacist John S. Pemberton created Coca-Cola, a drink initially marketed as a tonic. The name “Coca-Cola” reflects its original ingredients, coca leaves, and kola nuts.

Pemberton’s creation, a dark liquid mixed with carbonated water, was first sold at Jacobs’ Pharmacy in Atlanta for five cents a glass. The iconic Coca-Cola logo, designed by Frank M. Robinson, debuted shortly after, marking the beginning of a global phenomenon.
