Have you ever heard of the remarkable story of Dashrath Manjhi, the man who single-handedly carved a path through an entire mountain over 22 years? This incredible tale of perseverance and dedication in the face of adversity is a testament to the power of the human spirit.
Dashrath Manjhi was born in 1934 into the Musahar caste, one of the lowest in India’s rigid social hierarchy, in the remote village of Gehlaur in the Gaya district of Bihar. Life was already a daily struggle for Manjhi, who worked as a landless laborer to support his family. But his life changed forever in 1959 when his wife Falguni Devi tragically died after falling off a cliff while bringing him lunch across the treacherous 300-foot mountain that separated their village from the nearest town.
Devastated by his wife’s untimely death, Manjhi made an extraordinary vow – he would carve a path through the mountain to ensure no one else would suffer the same fate. Armed with only a hammer, chisel and crowbars, Manjhi began his seemingly impossible task, spending the next 22 years chipping away at the solid rock, often working through the night by the light of a fire.

The villagers of Gehlaur, located in the Atri block of present-day Gaya district, initially mocked Manjhi, calling him a “madman.” But his determination never wavered, and slowly, some began to help him in his herculean endeavor.
In 1982, Manjhi triumphantly completed his masterpiece – a 360-foot-long, 30-foot-wide and 25-foot-deep passage through the mountain. This remarkable feat reduced the distance between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Gaya district from 55 km to just 15 km, transforming the lives of the local villagers.
Manjhi’s incredible story has made him a revered figure across India, with his life being immortalized in the 2015 Bollywood biopic “Manjhi – The Mountain Man.”
Though he passed away in 2007 at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer, Dashrath Manjhi’s legacy as the “Mountain Man” lives on, inspiring people around the world with his extraordinary display of human willpower and resilience. His remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the power of the individual to overcome even the most daunting of obstacles.
