Vaginal yeast infections, also known as candidiasis, are common conditions that affect many women.
In a healthy vagina, there’s a balance of bacteria and yeast cells. However, when this balance is disrupted, yeast cells can multiply, leading to symptoms like intense itching, swelling, and irritation.
SYMPTOMS:
=> Vaginal itching
=> Swelling around the vagina
=> Burning during urination or sex
=> Pain during sex
=> Soreness
=> Redness
=> Rash
=> Whitish-gray, clumpy vaginal discharge (resembling cottage cheese), sometimes watery.
CAUSES:
1. Imbalance in the vaginal microbiome, allowing yeast to overgrow.
2. Factors such as antibiotics, pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, weak immune system, poor diet, hormonal changes, stress, and lack of sleep can contribute to this imbalance.
3. Candida albicans is the primary culprit, but other types of Candida can also cause infections.
TREATMENT:
For simple infections, doctors often prescribe one-to-three-day regimens of antifungal creams, ointments, tablets, or suppositories.
Common medications include butoconazole, clotrimazole, miconazole, terconazole, and fluconazole.
Follow-up with a doctor is recommended to ensure the treatment is effective, especially if symptoms recur within two months.
Complicated infections may require longer treatment durations, such as 14-day regimens or multiple doses of fluconazole. Partners may also need treatment if recurrent infections occur.
PREVENTION:
1. Maintain good hygiene practices
Avoid douching and using scented hygiene products.
2. Wear breathable underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing.
3. Practice safe sex.
Vaginal yeast infections are uncomfortable but treatable conditions that affect many women. Understanding the symptoms, causes, and treatments can help manage and prevent these infections effectively.
It’s essential to seek medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment, especially in cases of recurrent or severe infections.
Maintaining vaginal health through good hygiene practices and lifestyle habits can also contribute to prevention.
