How General Murtala Was Assassinated


Nigeria, February 13, 1976 – General Murtala Mohammed, a beloved and progressive leader of Nigeria, met a tragic end when he was assassinated in a targeted attack.

The assassination sent shockwaves throughout the nation and brought an abrupt halt to the promising reforms and advancements that General Mohammed had initiated during his short tenure as the Head of State.

The assassination took place on a misty morning in the bustling city of Lagos. General Mohammed’s convoy was ambushed as he journeyed from his residence to work at Dodan Barracks, where the Nigerian government and military had their headquarters.

The assailants, who had meticulously planned the attack, quickly approached the convoy on the narrow Benin-Shagamu Expressway, heavily armed and prepared for a deadly confrontation.
