Kallabi Leadership Fellowship has passed a bill and motion at the Niger State House of Assembly seeking to improve accessibility and protect the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The bill, An Act to Provide Facilities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Schools, proposes minimum accessibility standards in educational institutions to ensure inclusivity for students with disabilities.
The motion, Motion for the Full Implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in Niger State, calls for the enforcement of the federal law protecting PWDs from discrimination.
Speaking at the closeout event, Amrah Aliyu, Team Lead of the Salma Attah Foundation for Women and Girls Support (SAFWGS), emphasised the importance of ensuring these policies are enacted.
“These bills will not remain on paper. We will follow through, advocate, and ensure they reach the hands of decision-makers,” she said.
The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, represented by a member from Paiko, commended the fellows for their commitment, describing the initiative as a step towards inclusive governance.
The six-month fellowship, organised by SAFWGS, equipped young women with legislative training, mentorship, and an internship at the Niger State House of Assembly.
As part of the closing ceremony, the Kallabi Champion Award was presented to Hon Abdulmalik Sarkindaji for his support of women’s political inclusion.
The Kallabi Leadership Fellowship was made possible through the support of the Nigeria Youth Future Fund (NYFF) and LEAP Africa, organisations dedicated to empowering young leaders.
