Key Factors That Determined University Rankings


According to the Times Higher Education (T.H.E) World University Ranking 2024 report, universities were rated based on several indicators. Let’s analyze how these indicators contributed to the overall rating of universities:

  • Teaching: This category accounted for 29.5% of the overall rating. It included multiple factors such as teaching reputation (15%), staff-to-student ratio (4.5% doctorate-to-bachelors ratio (2%), doctorates awarded to academic staff ratio (5.5%), and institutional income (2.5%). 

This indicator focused on assessing the quality and effectiveness of teaching at universities.

  • Research Environment: This category held a weightage of 29% in the overall rating. It encompassed research reputation (18%), research income (5.5%), and research productivity (5.5%). 

The research environment indicator aimed to evaluate the resources, funding, and output of research activities within universities.

  • Research Quality: With a weightage of 30%, this indicator played a significant role in determining tuniversity’sity ratings. It considered citation impact (15%), research strength (5%), research excellence (5%), and research influence (5%). 

The research quality indicator assessed the impact and significance of the research conducted by universities.

  • International Outlook: This category accounted for 7.5% of the overall rating. It included factors such as the proportion of international students (2.5%the ), proportion of international staff (2.5%), and international collaboration (2.5%). 

This international outlook indicator aimed to evaluate the global diversity and engagement of universities.

  • Industry: This category carried a weightage of 4% in the overall rating. It considered industry income (2%) and patents (2%). The industry indicator assessed the university’s ability to collaborate with industries, generate income, and contribute to innovation.

It’s important to note that these indicators were assigned different weights to reflect their significance in evaluating university performance. 

The ratings were determined by analyzing data and metrics associated with each indicator, which were then weighted and combined to generate an overall ranking.
