2024 UTME: Nigeria Set to Implement 18-Years as Minimum Age for University Entry

In a bid to address the growing concern over the increasing number of underage students being admitted into universities, Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, has announced plans to establish 18 years as the minimum age requirement for university entry.

This decision comes as a response to the growing trend of students below the age of 18 being offered admission, a phenomenon that is contributing to the moral decadence of the university system.

The Minister made this announcement during a visit to Abuja, where he emphasized the importance of ensuring that students are adequately prepared for the rigors of university education. He expressed concern over the pressure from parents that is causing young students to pursue higher education before they are ready.

Prof. Mamman stated that the minimum age for university entry is 18, but many students are being admitted before this age. He noted that these students are often too young to understand the demands of university education, which can lead to academic and personal challenges.

The Minister urged parents to support their children’s academic journey by allowing them to mature properly before pursuing higher education. He emphasized that the 6-3-3-4 education system is designed to ensure that students are adequately prepared for university education, and that rushing this process can have negative consequences.

This decision is a significant step towards ensuring that university education in Nigeria is of high quality and that students are adequately prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

By establishing 18 years as the minimum age requirement for university entry, Prof. Mamman is sending a clear message that the academic and personal development of students is a top priority.
