Contrary to widespread beliefs, leading gynaecologists have clarified that s3xual positions do not play a significant role in aiding pregnancy.
According to experts, the idea that certain positions, such as missionary or doggy style, can increase the chances of conception lacks any scientific basis.
POPULAR MYTHS DEBUNKED
Online sources have frequently claimed that specific S3x positions might enhance conception by positioning the penis closer to the cervix, supposedly facilitating sperm flow into the fallopian tubes.
However, a recent investigation reveals that these claims hold no scientific merit.
Professor Ernest Orji, a seasoned expert in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, shed light on the topic, asserting that “There is no sexual position that a woman takes that makes conception easier or faster. A woman can get pregnant as long as healthy sperm reaches the vagina and swims to the cervix, regardless of the position.”

Orji highlighted that the movement of sperm is efficient once it enters the vaginal canal, unaffected by the position during intercourse. He further explained that only if the cervix is blocked would conception be hindered. “If every other factor is normal, including viable sperm and healthy reproductive organs, pregnancy can occur. Even if the sperm lands on the woman’s thigh, conception is possible if it travels into the vagina,” he added.
ADDRESSING MISCONCEPTIONS
Supporting Orji’s stance, Dr. Stanley Egbogu, a Consultant Gynaecologist, confirmed that S3x positions are irrelevant to the probability of conception. He noted, “Anytime there is difficulty in conceiving, we don’t look at the position. Position does not mean anything.” Egbogu emphasized that the primary consideration for conception is the health of the sperm and the reproductive system.
Moreover, Dr. Egbogu pointed out that individuals relying on the withdrawal method for contraception could still face pregnancy risks due to pre-ejaculatory fluid containing viable sperm. “Even pre-ejaculation fluid can result in pregnancy. The idea that only deep penetration ensures conception is a myth,” he said.
EXPERT ADVICE ON FAMILY PLANNING
Both gynaecologists reinforced that S3x positions do not serve as a method of family planning or contraception. Dr. Egbogu elaborated, “If you want to prevent pregnancy, there are well-established methods, including emergency contraception, oral contraceptive pills, condoms, cervical caps, injectables, implants, and intrauterine devices.”
The withdrawal method, while recognized as a form of family planning, has a notably high failure rate. “Sexual position is not a reliable contraceptive method,” Egbogu reiterated.
WHEN POSITION MATTERS
Although S3x positions are not relevant to general conception, both experts noted that they might have some importance during gender selection practices. However, even in such cases, the link between position and conception remains minimal compared to other factors.
FINAL TAKEAWAY
For couples trying to conceive, focusing on overall reproductive health and timing—particularly ovulation—is more crucial than the position adopted during intercourse. Healthy sperm and eggs are the main determinants of successful conception.
Gynaecologists urge couples to avoid misconceptions and consult with healthcare professionals for accurate family planning advice.
